Terry D. Newberry. Birmingham: Psalm/One Press, 2011. 147 pp. (Hardback, paperback, audio — thebossbook.com).
True, it is a book filled with leadership tips — some you may actually already know — but it is more than just the latest book summarizing how to be a good leader. It is a story of how a true leader, The Boss, invests in others and how his investment is absorbed by one particular student, Dean — a student who eventually becomes a master of leadership development like The Boss.
Terry Newberry shows off his skill of storytelling in this 147-page book that becomes glued to your hands once you pick it up. I managed to complete the entire book, including every inch of the book jacket, in a little over two hours. I probably could have finished it faster, but I kept stopping to process the life lessons Dean was learning from The Boss. I wanted to think through how I might apply them to my life.
I realized I had learned some of the lessons before, but I was not able to articulate or apply them like Newberry outlines them. I also learned several new life principles that I am eager to put into practice.
All in all, reading this book has already made me a better person.
Simple, straightforward, interesting, easy to read, smooth in its flow, practical, educational, inspirational and coming from one who has a deep faith, a proven leadership development track record and a long list of life experiences — I recommend it to anyone seeking to do or be better, no matter the field or position.
