Lucille Bagwell has written hundreds of encouraging letters to bereaved families. She writes letters to everyone in her 6,000-member church who loses a loved one.
Q: What led you to begin writing these letters?
A: I’m a Christian, and I feel like Christians should care about other people.
Q: Why have you done this work?
A: I had met so many people who had lost a loved one and needed encouragement, and I felt that they needed to know that other people cared.
Q: What does this demand?
A: It demands that I budget my time and use every day to lift somebody up. Very few days pass that I don’t write. It means self-discipline.
Q: What do you get from writing the letters?
A: I feel like Jesus would be pleased to know that Christians care for each other and take the time to let them know and to pray for them, too. Along with each letter I write, I ask God to make it a blessing and encouragement, and I ask God to give me the wisdom to say the right thing.
Q: How do other family members support you?
A: My husband was always supportive as long as he lived in giving money for stamps and giving up time with me. He was always kind to me as I spent many hours at my desk writing.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: As long as I have the time, energy and resources, I want to continue.
