Bob Terry’s recent editorial on Saudi Arabia was poignant. I couldn’t find much wrong with his assertions.
I do think some reference to Charles Kimball’s “When Religion Becomes Evil,” however, would have been appropriate.
While Terry’s effort was outstanding I have to ask what his reservations are about exploring fundamentalism within our own ranks. I am convinced Baptists’ continued funding of the Cooperative Program, specifically Richard Land’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, amounts to complicity in a milder version, a wink and a nod to a similar mind-set in Baptist life, which Terry and all of us abhor in Saudi Arabia.
I commend to you a review of how Alabama Baptists for fear of the funds drying up have danced around the issues surrounding Judge Roy Moore’s recent aspirations, not to mention the negative spin Alabama Baptists would get from the likes of the Rick and Bubba show if we were to act like real Baptists.
