Retired International Mission Board missionary and former Alabama Baptist pastor Howard Olive, 87, died Dec. 8 in Birmingham.
A missionary to the Philippines for 32 years, Olive served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Auburn, before being called to the missions field in 1955. He served as pastor of a church in Kentucky before coming to Auburn.
After returning from the missions field in 1987, Olive helped start Lake Martin Baptist Church in Dadeville. He was a member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, Birmingham Association, when he died.
Olive would teach classes at Samford University in Birmingham during stateside assignments as a missionary.
He attended Southwest Baptist College in Missouri and completed his undergraduate work at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
Olive received his doctorate from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
On the missions field, Olive and his wife, Marjorie, served as professors at the Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary for 10 years. They then developed a mass media department in radio and television in Manila.
Along with his wife, Olive is survived by four children — Douglas (deceased), Timothy, Marjorie and Dee; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. (TAB)
