Students and teachers woke up just a little bit earlier than usual this morning. Each made their way to their schools, gathered at the flag pole and bowed their heads in prayer.
This year’s Annual Global Day of Student Prayer also represented the 22nd annual See You at the Pole (SYATP), a time of prayer for friends, schools, cities, states and the nation.
SYATP 2012 was titled “Awaken,” taken from Ephesians 3:14-21.
Tracy Miller, a Fruithurst Elementary School teacher, said “I think (SYATP) is a good time for teachers to be able to show students that they believe in prayer and are not ashamed of it. I will be praying for our school, students, family friends and country.”
More than 50 attended St. Clair County High School’s SYATP. Thirty students and teachers were at Odenville Middle School and 75 people attended Moody Junior High School. More than 35 students met at Moody High School.
SYATP, coordinated in Alabama by First Priority Greater Birmingham, is a student-initiated, student-led movement started in 1990. According to a First Priority press release, SYATP originated with one youth group, meeting at night at several schools in the community during a weekend retreat.
First Priority estimates 25,000 to 30,000 students across the greater Birmingham area participated in SYATP 2012.
