Judson College hosts summer sports camps

Middle schoolers from around the nation converged on Judson College in Marion this summer for three CrossPoint Sports Camps. Judson is one of several campuses across the nation providing space for the camps, with the distinction of having sponsored camps for nine years.

Ricky Clements, Judson facilities director, said the college continues to be a popular camp location. “Judson’s camp is always the first camp to fill up,” Clements said. “A lot of Alabama churches come here year after year.  We see great advantage for the college since we have students who first came to Judson as CrossPoint campers.”

Clements noted that another plus for the Judson College camps is the availability of the campus of Marion Military Institute (MMI) down the street. He said the Judson campers use a number of facilities there, including the gym, baseball and football fields and the track.

CrossPoint offers instruction in 10 different sports. Instructors give both elementary and advanced instruction. And just because someone has played baseball, soccer or another sport doesn’t mean they gravitate to that track. Campers are encouraged to try something new.

CrossPoint’s mission statement declares that each camp will try to instill athletic excellence and present the message of Jesus Christ. Accordingly there is daily Bible study and nightly worship.

CrossPoint campers and chaperones learn other skills in addition to the sports instruction. Classes are offered each afternoon in choral music, drama, puppet ministry and other areas.

Evening worship features contemporary music, videos and drama.

Twenty-two middle schoolers became Christians during the three camps at Judson.
