Armstrong, Boyd

Boyd Armstrong, retired associate pastor of Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Vestavia Hills, Birmingham Association, died March 22. He was 87.

A native of Kentucky, Armstrong was a Baptist minister for 62 years serving churches in Alabama, Kentucky and Mississippi. In Alabama, he was pastor of North Phenix Baptist Church, Phenix City (1954–1959), University Baptist Church, Huntsville (1959–1975) and associate pastor of Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Birmingham (1975–1999).

He was a graduate of Campbellsville College, Campbellsville, Ky.; Georgetown College, Georgetown, Ky.; and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky. In 1991, University Baptist Church named its worship center the Boyd E. Armstrong Building and named him pastor emeritus

Active in associational and state convention   leadership, he was moderator of the Russell and Madison associations, president of the Russell and Madison associational pastors’ conferences and a member of the executive board of the Alabama Baptist State Con­vention.

Armstrong also served as a member of the board of ministerial aid for the state convention.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie, three children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. (TAB)
