Birmingham Baptist Association (BBA) is seeking 175-200 pastors and laypersons for a series of simultaneous revivals planned for this summer in Brazil.
Mike McLemore, pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church, Hoover, said BBA has been asked by the Brazilian Baptist Convention to partner with 100 of their churches in revivals scheduled for Aug. 29-Sept. 3 and to hold a mass crusade in a 30,000-seat stadium located in the capital city of Brasilia.
“Brazil is a country that is wide open to the gospel,” McLemore said.
Revival participants can be preachers, staff members, deacons or laymen who are willing to preach and lead a church in four revival services and to help in evangelistic visitation, McLemore said.
He said the revival effort is a continuation of work that began in 1990 with a 10-year partnership with Brazil in which BBA build 32 chapels in the country.
Financial support
In addition to volunteers, he said BBA hopes Baptists will support the effort through financial gifts.
The association is hoping at least 100 churches will give $100 each to cover the cost of bus transportation for Brazilians attending the revivals. Additionally, he said the revival team hopes to provide those who make professions of faith with a Bible written in Portuguese, at a cost of $4 each.
McLemore said donations for bus transportation can be made now, with checks payable to Birmingham Baptist Association and designated for the “Brazilian Bus Transportation Fund.” He said the association hopes to have the money by June 20.
Money for the purchase of Bibles is also being accepted now. He said contributors may donate toward the cost of as many Bibles as they want, with checks made payable to the association and designated for “Brazilian Bibles.” McLemore said money for the Bibles should be in by June 30.
The cost for participating is $1,420, which includes a chartered plane trip from Birmingham to Brasilia, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, and some meals and tips. McLemore said the revival team will leave Birmingham Aug. 29 and return Sept. 4.
McLemore said interested persons should contact Brian Pitts or Linda Pear at BBA at 205-251-7161. The deadline for registration is March 31, with a $100 nonrefundable deposit due by that time.
He said half of the remaining $660 must be paid by May 1 with the balance due by June 30.
Participants must have a current passport and have all forms, passports and payments at the BBA office by June 30.
McLemore said an orientation meeting is scheduled May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeside Baptist Church, Hoover.
