NEW HAMPSHIRE — The New Hampshire priest who was consecrated recently as the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church said it may be time for his denomination to split because of theological differences.
V. Gene Robinson’s consecration as bishop of New Hampshire has inched the U.S. church toward schism with sister churches in the Anglican Communion. Some 20 Anglican churches in the global south declared themselves in “impaired communion” with the U.S. church following the Nov. 2 consecration. He said his opponents have a literal view of Scripture that has never been mandatory in the Anglican tradition.
