Lynda Kerr Boswell is one of the volunteers who reads articles from The Alabama Baptist newspaper for a tape ministry at the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions in Montgomery. The ministry serves those dependent on sound for communication, and Boswell has participated in this ministry work for 15 years.
A: My parents, K. Howard and Mary Y. Kerr. My dad was a pastor at four churches over the years and was a minister for 62 years. My mother was the church organist.
Q: When and how were you led into this ministry work?
A: One of the ladies from Heritage [Baptist] was (part of the) reading (ministry) at the time and I told her I was interested and to let me know when they needed another reader. My husband was legally blind and didn’t like me reading to him except for the SEC scores, which I thought were boring. He told me I should volunteer somewhere reading to the blind. This volunteer position came about after he died. He would be happy to know that I am doing something he suggested and that makes me very happy.
Q: What do you get from this ministry work?
A: I am so blessed that I can share with others something I love doing which is reading. It is like I have a connection to these people and I am glad that I can get information out.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this ministry work in the future?
A: This makes me so happy and I can’t see myself in the future not being able to do it. … So I will continue as long as I have the strength and capability.
