Stevie Russell Tierce had a “genuine heart” and was “very compassionate,” said Wendell Dutton, director of missions for Cherokee Baptist Association. Tierce, who was a second-generation pastor of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Centre, passed away Feb. 1. He was 59.
Pilgrim Rest Baptist was destroyed by an April 11, 2011, tornado. A few months later on July 3, 2011, Tierce was severely injured in an automobile accident.
Tierce’s wife, Patty, said the outpouring of love from the community and church family has been “amazing” during the difficult time of recovery and in her husband’s passing.
Tierce, who attended classes at Howard College (now Samford University) extension center in Centre, felt called into the ministry in 1975. Years later he served as a bivocational pastor of Pilgrim Rest for nearly eight years while working for the Polk County Public Works in Cedartown, Ga.
He was a lifelong member of Weiss Lake Antique Power Association and served as the tractor club’s chaplain for three years. He also was a member of Mount Signal Masonic Lodge in Piedmont.
He is survived by his wife, Patty, three children and four grandchildren.
