Authorities in Kano, Nigeria, ban Christian worship

KANO, Nigeria — Authorities of Kumbotso local government council in the state of Kano, Nigeria, have banned Christians from holding worship services. “This directive by the Kumbotso local government area for Christians not to conduct Sunday worship service anywhere within the estate which belongs to the federal government has raised a lot of concern,” A.U. Uba, secretary of the Kano state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), told Compass Direct on Sept. 14. He added that the decision has increased tensions between Muslims and Christians in the area. Uba stressed the need for Muslim leaders occupying political office to treat all people equally, irrespective of religious affiliation.

The government of Kano state has reportedly seized lands belonging to Christian schools to use for sites to construct business shops. “You can’t believe that a government, which claims it is working to promote religious tolerance, is the same government that has been seizing landed properties from Christian schools and allocating them to rich Muslims for the building of shops,” Uba said.
