Bobby Britt, a well-known pastor-evangelist who served at several Alabama Baptist churches and preached at revivals worldwide, died March 28. He was 76.
Britt, a native of Birmingham, preached at youth revivals during his undergraduate years at Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and during that time also served as pastor of Maytown Baptist Church.
He continued to serve as an evangelist while at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
He and his wife, Carolyn, married in 1957. After years of serving as an evangelist, Britt returned to Alabama to serve as pastor of Hilldale Baptist Church, Birmingham,from 1977–1983.
He then resumed evangelism for the next several years, and then served as pastor of Fourth Avenue Baptist Church, Birmingham, for five years.
Britt later remained in the Birmingham area to hold revivals and serve interim pastorates at Agape Baptist Church and Palmerdale Baptist Church.
In 2004, he celebrated 50 years of ministry, and in 2011 his autobiography “Tis Grace Thus Far: The Amazing Grace Story of Bobby Britt” was printed. In it, Britt chronicled his life from a young age through his years as pastor and evangelist. He also wrote the book “When Life Tumbles In,” a study of James 1:1–12.
Ron Pate, pastor of Hilldale Baptist, said Britt was always ready to witness to anyone and had a passion for reaching lost souls. “He was a man with a tremendous passion for preaching and teaching the Word of God,” he said.
Pate added that during Britt’s time as the pastor of Hilldale, “the church grew numerically” and a family life center was built to expand the ministry of the church to the community.
Two of Britt’s sons are Baptist pastors: Barry Britt is pastor of Spring Valley Baptist Church, Springville, and Steve Britt is pastor of Northbrook Baptist Church, Cullman.
Britt is survived by his wife, three children;sevengrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
