DES MOINES, Iowa — The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union may not have the publicity it did when Carry A. Nation ushered in Prohibition, but it’s still around, and the group held its 130th annual meeting in Des Moines the last week of July. The 6,000-member WCTU has broadened its mission from fighting alcohol abuse to drugs and pornography. This year’s national campaign fights tobacco use and promotes the display of the Ten Commandments. This year, the WCTU gave the Annie Wittenmyer White Ribbon Award to Donald E. Wildmon, founder of American Family Association.
