Only A Shadow
Forerunner Music/International House of Prayer
Misty Edwards’ new CD, “Only A Shadow,” recorded live at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City’s (IHOPKC) 2013 Onething Conference and accompanied by a DVD of the performance, debuted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Christian Albums Chart, then promptly moved to the No. 1 spot on iTunes. That shouldn’t come as a surprise to those familiar with Edwards and with the IHOPKC’s excellent group of musicians.
This is pure praise that’s designed to move the listener into a oneness with the Holy Spirit. It’s slow, trancey and repetitive, more feel and emotion than mainstream contemporary Christian music. This is the kind of music the IHOPKC does best, and Edwards is one of their most skilled and prominent practitioners.
Here Edwards and the band flow from song to song, punctuated by spontaneous moments of worship. While this kind of music is best experienced live, if you can watch the DVD without once having your arms in the air in pure praise to our Father, I’m surprised. This is perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s great, moving music and some of the best of the genre.
