Those who are familiar with Andrew Peterson have most likely learned to appreciate his nasal croon if not for its genuine charm then for the sheer depth and insight of the words it utters. Peterson has proved himself to be a superior writer of songs, so what is there to look forward to on his newest recording “Love & Thunder?”

“Love & Thunder” is a departure from the familiar for Peterson. His wife, Jamie, has resigned her position as backing vocalist, and his longtime sidekick, Gabe Scott, has moved on to other musical undertakings. But Peterson has not been left all alone. Jill Phillips replaces Jamie as a backup vocalist, while Allison Krauss and Ron Block of Union Station lend their talents to this earthy collection of songs.

This album is in many ways more subdued than Peterson’s first two recordings. Musically, “Love & Thunder” explores more on folk and bluegrass sounds than previous albums. Lyrically, Peterson continues to hold high the banner of fine songcrafting vacated by the late Rich Mullins. This is one of Peterson’s best projects to date. It is rich both in sound and content. This truly is a remarkable album.
