In June 2001, I was in Shawnee, Okla., for the Literacy Missions Leadership workshop. There were between 11 and 14 people from the state of Nevada training in all tracks of literacy because of the great need in Nevada.
The SBC headquarters for that area is in Las Vegas. These people are so dedicated to spreading the gospel any way it can be spread. That is why they were there for the training.
Most of the showgirls in Las Vegas are not U.S. citizens and do not have any command of English or have a very small vocabulary in our language. Many of the girls are brought here under false pretenses. Once here, they are trapped into that life. These Baptists in Las Vegas were training to help these girls and to give them the gospel. They saw an opportunity for the gospel, and by the grace of God, stepped into this arena to help at the times the girls were available. This is between shows, just getting off work in the early morning hours. Whatever the hour, they are there giving Bible studies, teaching English, tutoring, mentoring and helping to mend broken lives.
I was appalled at the letter in the Aug. 1 edition of The Alabama Baptist questioning witnessing to showgirls. Even if the place was somewhere you might consider unsavory, this is called going to meet the needs of people just as Jesus did.
