Gold City Amazing Grace — A Hymn Collection (Daywind)

“They just don’t make albums like this anymore.” That might be the most appropriate phrase to describe Gold City’s newest effort, “Amazing Grace — A Hymn Collection.” Here is a gathering of 10 time-honored songs expertly performed by one of the greatest quartets to ever sing on the southern gospel stage.

You can’t help but feel that the writers of the songs found on this recording would be honored by the loving renditions Gold City offers. Pull out the red-back hymnal and sing along as the quartet moves through a variety of favorites.

To try to pick a favorite from this recording is essentially an exercise in futility. However, tunes of note include Mark Trammell’s rendition of “My Heavenly Father Watches Over Me,” the very smooth “Pass Me Not,” the quartet classic “When We Sing Around the Throne Eternal” and the majestic “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Despite what some people may say, recordings like “Amazing Grace — A Hymn Collection” certainly have a big place in the southern gospel marketplace. Yes, it’s true they just don’t make albums like this anymore. But they should.
