Have you noticed how many people use their iPads or cellphones in church now instead of a traditional Bible? Five of 12 people on my row Sunday were using electronic Bibles, and all of the ones I could see were using the same app: YouVersion, also known as The Bible App.
As of this writing, YouVersion had been installed on more than 129 million mobile devices. Every second in 2013, 31 people opened the app. Sixty-eight million verses were shared on social media like Facebook and Twitter.
Why YouVersion? For one thing, the app includes hundreds of Bible reading plans. Besides several “read through the Bible” plans, there are reading plans from Billy Graham, Andy Stanley, John Piper and just about every Christian music group you can name. There are topical and seasonal plans, like the ones that always appear before Easter and Christmas. The plans help you stay on track with your reading, checking off each chapter as you read it and even sending you an email reminder if you get behind.
Other neat features include 739 different Bible versions in 460 languages, a search engine and a verse of the day. You can bookmark passages, make notes and even turn on an audio version to listen to as you drive.
