Organizers of the 2000 Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference wan the Word depicted as it is preached.

Joe Godfrey, pastor of Taylor Road Baptist Church, Montgomery, and president of the Pastors Conference, has scheduled chalk artist Dan Ondra during each session of the No. 13 conference. The theme of the one-day conference to be held at Frazer memorial United Methodist Church, Montgomery, is “Consider Him,” taken from Hebrews 12:3. Frazer memorial is located at 6000 Atlanta Highway.

Ondra, who is from Maryland, will sketch visual images relating to each session during the praise and worship time. He also will preach during the afternoon session.

“Each year the Pastors Conference reflects the person of the president,” Godfrey said. “I was an art major in college and sometimes do sermon in chalk. That is some of who I am.”

The morning session begins at 8:30 and follows the theme “Consider Him, the Creator Christ.” Preachers for the morning session are Al Jackson, pastor of Lakeview Baptist Church, Auburn; Jeff Noblit, pastor of First Baptist Church, Muscle Shoals; an d Doug Sager, former pastor of Roebuck Park Baptist Church, Birmingham and new pastor of First Baptist Concord, in Knoxville, Tenn.

Along with Ondra, the afternoon session will feature Ed Litton, pastor of First Baptist North Mobile; and Ken Hemphill, president of Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. The theme of the afternoon session is “Consider Him, the Crucified and Resurrected Christ,” It begins at 1:30 p.m.

Following the dinner break, Christian artist Charles Billingsley will kick off the evening session “Consider Him, the Coming Christ” at 6:30. Billingsley, a graduate of Samford University, also will lead praise and worship during the final session. Featured preachers for the night are David Dykes, former pastor of First Baptist Church, Gardendale, and current pastor of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas, and Tim LaHaye, author of the “Left Behind” series.

Other music throughout the day will be provided by Taylor Road Baptist Church, Montgomery, and East Memorial Baptist Church, Prattville. No ministers’ wives luncheon is planned this year.

While the site of the state convention that takes place Nov. 14-15 is the Montgomery Civic Center, Frazer was purposely selected for the location of the Pastors Conference, Godfrey said. “There are two reasons the Pastors Conference is not at the civic center,” he said. “One, it doesn’t lend itself to worship. Two, the cost.”

And with about 2,000 people attending last year’s conference in Mobile, Godfrey wanted to make sure he had enough seating. Frazer is the largest worship center in Montgomery, he said.

Godfrey said he is pleased with the conference program and anticipates an excitement with LaHaye’s presence because his appearance falls with the release of the eighth book in his “Left Behind” series.

“I believe the conference will encourage and challenge our pastors,” Godfrey said. “I’d like to see God move. Anytime we get together to worship we want to experience His presence and power.”

Encouraging all ministers to attend, including bi-vocational, Godfrey said, “It will be worth the sacrifice. I’m excited about what God’s going to do,” he said. “Come and expect to see Jesus.”
