For the past four years, he was pastor of First Baptist Church, Scottsboro, and recently received the Troy L. Morrison Leadership Award for established work. In those four years, average worship attendance at First Church, Scottsboro, increased by about 270 and the budget by hundreds of thousands. The church now has two Sunday morning worship services. It purchased additional property, renovated a building on it and collected $480,000 on a single Sunday to pay for it all.

Q: What influences in your life pointed you to Christ at the beginning of your faith journey?

A: My parents. I was 10. I prayed to accept Christ one Sunday morning.

Q: When and how were you led into the ministry?

A: I used to speak at youth groups when I played sports. When I was 17, I felt called to the ministry. It was at Highland Baptist Church, Pulaski, Tenn., where I shared that publicly.

Q: What does the ministry demand?

A: Everything. I don’t think you can separate life and ministry. Ministry is part of your life. When you follow the Lord, you’re called to follow the Lord. Everyone has a ministry.

Q: What do you get from the ministry?

A: I needed to pursue the ministry because that’s what God wanted me to do. I get the satisfaction of knowing that I’m doing what God has called me to do. My goal is just to be what I am in Him.

Q: How do family members support you?

A: Mandy very much sees her role as supporting me. She’s a super cheerleader and takes care of all the behind-the-scenes things in our world. Levi is 6 and is learning how to pray for Daddy now and to understand what I do.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this ministry in the future?

A: You try to remain fruitful wherever God places you. I just want to be used to see the Kingdom grow.

Q: What difference will the ministry make for you in the future?

A: I hope I can be like the psalmist said: “Even when I am old and gray” I want it said that I continued to serve the Lord. You value the journey and prepare for the next life.

Q: What difference has Jesus Christ made in your life?

A: He has made all the difference, period. He has changed every part of my life and continues to conform me into His image.
