Want to know God?

Want to know God?

Sycamore Baptist Church, Sylacauga

I have on my desk in my office at church a hand-carved figure made especially for me from a craftsman in Africa. It shows a man kneeling in prayer before an opened Bible. When he gave it to me he said, “There is not another one like this in the entire world. It is one-of-a-kind.”

The Bible teaches us that this is how God feels about you and me. We are “one-of-a-kind” creations by God. God loves you uniquely, individually, just as you are.

The Bible also teaches us that man has sinned, and sin separates us from a holy God. We have earned God’s wrath and punishment for the way we have offended His holiness by choosing our way over His. But His love was so great that it moved Him to offer His only Son as a sacrifice for our sins.

The Bible teaches us that Jesus’ death on Calvary’s cross was not planned and implemented by men. Jesus was not at the mercy of a Roman ruler. He was not subject to the whims of angry, jealous religious rulers. No, God sent Jesus to the cross so that the wrath of God toward sin could be poured out on His Son, Jesus, and not on you and me. Now by placing our faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross, by trusting in the blood that He shed for me there, I am made right with God. I’m accepted as righteous and holy because Jesus is my righteousness and my holiness.

Every day I’m reminded that God made me special and that I am just what He wanted to make. I rejoice in the fact that I am “fearfully and wonderfully made” in the image of my Creator. I am humbled by the truth that in my rebellion against God, He chose forgiveness instead of rejection, grace instead of judgment.

Today could I encourage you to simply trust in the finished work of Jesus? You are no accident. You are a unique creation by God. You were made to belong to your Father in heaven. Call on Him today by admitting to Him that you are a sinner. Tell Him today you will trust that Jesus died for your personal sins. Invite Jesus to be your Savior today. Then you will discover exactly what you were created for. To belong to the Craftsman who made you for Himself.
