Cindy Lewis, 49, of Carrollton, has a passion for teaching the Bible. She said it is important for people to hear the Bible taught in a way that they can understand it, in order to apply it to their life and glorify God. She has been active in teaching Bible studies and Sunday School classes at her church, singing in the choir and serving with Martha’s Ministry, which provides bereavement meals. She is treasurer for Pickens Baptist Association and has been a volunteer for Baptist Center Thrift Store. She is involved in a Bible study at the Federal Correctional Institute in Aliceville and works with Kairos Prison Ministry. In her community she participates in an Esther prayer group and Bible study, whose participants are from different denominations.

Q: What influences in your life pointed you to Christ at the beginning of your faith journey?

A: My childhood was grounded in the church and my parents were living examples of Christianity. I grew up knowing who Jesus was and I accepted Him as my personal Lord and Savior as a young child.

Q: When and how were you led into your ministry work?

A: I love to study and teach the Bible. Several years ago, I was asked to teach a Sunday School class and, over the last several years, I have taught a variety of studies to a variety of ages. … I also have had a new opportunity to teach in the prison setting at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Aliceville, a women’s prison.

Q: What does your ministry work demand?

A: Being a part of ministry among young adults and/or in a prison setting requires flexibility. But most importantly it requires being willing to see and hear with the eyes and ears of God and then respond with His love. Loving and listening are the keys.

Q: What do you get from your ministry work?

A: I learn so much from the residents at FCI-Aliceville about God and His Word and I am so encouraged to see them and the young couples I teach eager to learn and grow in their Christian faith. I also have joy and contentment in knowing I am being obedient to God in using the gifts He has given me for His glory.

Q: How do family members support you?

A: My ministry takes me away from home and family time; but my family supports and encourages me to use my gifts any time God opens a door for ministry in His name.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?

A: I am a part of a Kairos team that has an ongoing ministry at FCI-Aliceville. I look forward to continuing my work with them and seeing what other doors God might open for me in the future.

Q: What difference has Jesus Christ made in your life?

A: Because of the presence of Jesus Christ in my life, I want my life to bring Him honor and glory. This life is not about me. It is about Him.
