Want to know God

Want to know God

Bethel Baptist Church, Robertsdale

This year our church’s annual outdoor “Walk Through Bethlehem” presentation coincided with a majestic display of God’s creation. As the gospel message was presented to more than 2,400 people, the beautiful Geminid meteor shower was occurring overhead.

We witnessed God’s beauty flash across the western sky over and over again as “oohs” and “aahs” were heard from participants and cast members alike. God was simply showing off.

It reminded me of the nights spent on a missions trip to Neshuro, Zimbabwe, in 2009. As darkness arrived our team beheld a starlit sky so rarely seen anymore — stars too numerous to count, southern hemisphere constellations we had never learned about and creation as we had never witnessed. There were no man-made lights to dim its beauty. We were speechless. Perhaps we were experiencing Psalm 19:1: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

Psalm 19:8 further reads, “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.”

As amazing and vast as God’s creation is, we don’t have to wait for the next celestial event to be amazed by God. His desire is that we live in His wonder and amazement every day. God’s command is radiant, giving light to the eyes.

The same God who made stars so distant that we have not yet discovered them sent His Son Jesus to be near instead of far, personal instead of unknown and glorious above all of the heavens. And by knowing Him we can realize the truth of His words in John 8:12: “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” All of the stars in the sky pale in comparison to the beauty, significance and importance of the Light of the world, Jesus Christ.
