Newsboys want music to be ‘battle cry’ for Christians

Recording 33 No. 1 radio hits, selling more than 8 million records and garnering numerous awards and accolades, the Newsboys are recognized as one of the most influential bands in Christian music today.

Although band members have changed throughout the years the common goal and purpose of the group remains the same: to share messages of hope and salvation through songs.

Last year the group gained notable attention while making a cameo appearance in the movie “God’s Not Dead” and performing their hit song which served as the inspiration for the film.

“The music and message go hand-in-hand with this movie,” said lead singer Michael Tait. “It’s another tool to share the gospel. The music is a testament or creed to what we as believers hold on to and hopefully will be our battle cry each day in our daily pursuit of holiness. It’s unbelievable the amount of young kids who have been responding to this song.”

The group has heard countless stories about the impact this song is having on young lives. This motivates them to keep pressing forward in their musical journey.

Keyboard player Jeff Frankenstein said, “We received a phone call about an 8-year-old boy in the hospital who had been fighting leukemia. His uncle had called and asked if we would surprise him with a visit. We met with his family and this little boy had unbelievable faith. He knew all the songs and pulled up the ‘God’s Not Dead’ music video on his iPad and actually sang the song to us.

“It just blew us away and was a moment we’ll never forget. Having my own family now, I understand why families are being impacted and why music is such a powerful tool to reach people with the gospel. The Christian music industry is such an effective tool for parents to have and I can see why parents appreciate it so much.”

‘We are so blessed’

By sharing the message behind their music during concerts the group hopes to encourage all ages to do great things for Christ.

“We are so blessed to be on this journey,” Frankenstein said. “No matter what profession you have, when you’re doing something you know that God has called you to do it’s a great feeling. When people ask for advice about their career I always tell them: ‘Don’t ever despise where you are because you might be exactly where God wants you.’

“After all these years and thousands of shows there has never been a night when I haven’t been excited to be doing this,” he said. “When there’s true purpose and meaning behind the music there is a unifying factor. It’s one of the things that has kept us together for so long.

“I think concerts are one of the few things able to draw people from different ages, races and denominations together to worship in one place. It’s such a powerful thing when you look out into the audience and see different generations coming together to lift up the name of Christ.”
