Meeting someone special is so much a part of the dating scene. Online sites promise to match persons of like-mindedness and encourage the opportunity for a match to strike. However, there must be a move from the profile to the person. The margin between reading the profile and meeting the person is a bridge that must be crossed before relationship happens.
Bill and Jane’s marriage began online. They both were intrigued by the values each wrote in their resumés. It all looked good on paper. A date was set for a personal meeting. Bill was immediately attracted to Jane’s appearance, but more than that, he was won over by the person she was. Both knew Christ as Savior and wanted a marriage that would follow biblical guidelines in a life-long commitment. Their relationship became personal when they committed their hearts.
Jesus took His disciples to a place called Caesarea Philippi. They had seen the things He had done and heard the things He had said. He questioned them concerning the street talk about who He was. Answers came with impressive profiles.
Then He asked the question each person needs to answer: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matt. 16:15) Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus was more than a person on paper. He was someone to commit your life to.
What is your answer to Jesus’ question? To many He is a great teacher, to others He is a prophet and to some He is a revolutionary who ended up in misguided tragedy.
However, as we read the Bible, we find His purpose was to seek and save. His death on the cross was a payment for our sins and His resurrection gave us victory over death. Facts on paper lead us to knowing about Him, but an invitation from the heart gives us a connection to know Him personally. That bridge is crossed when we bow in humble obedience. Knowing Him becomes a lifelong process that has eternal benefits.
