A conference on sexuality may not seem like a typical topic for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM) to tackle, but then again, these aren’t typical times. In the days following the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex “marriage” in 2015, SBOM formed a Church and Culture Task Force to help churches minister more effectively in a rapidly changing culture.
One result of that task force is the upcoming Church and Sexuality Conference on Feb. 29 at First Baptist Church, Montgomery. The conference will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 3:45 p.m. It immediately precedes the State Evangelism Conference.
“For several decades our Alabama Baptist churches have been challenged by the sexual revolution occurring in our nation, a revolution that has become a tsunami of change with the legalization of same-sex ‘marriage,’” said retired state missionary Dale Huff, who serves as chairman of the task force.
The conference will headline Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, and Timothy George, dean of Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham.
Moore also will participate in a panel discussion along with Joe Godfrey, executive director of Alabama Citizens Action Program, on the topic of “Religious Liberty in a Culture of Moral Decline.”
Participants will have the opportunity to choose from 1 of 9 breakout sessions designed to equip ministers and church members with tools to respond to cultural issues including cohabitation, gender identity, pornography, homosexuality, intolerance and sexuality within marriage.
A second panel discussion, “Taking This Back to My Church,” will conclude the conference.
“We felt it was important to end the day with a very practical discussion focused on ‘Where do we go from here and what do we do with the information we’ve learned?’” Huff said.
