Joe McKeever. Cleveland, Tenn.: Parson’s Porch Books, 2015. 141 pp. (Paperback).
If you are reading this in The Alabama Baptist, you undoubtedly recognize the name of the author; he is the cartoonist who delights us with his humorous drawings that cut to the heart of Baptist life.
Joe McKeever may have even drawn your picture at some event around the state; with his keen eye and quick hand, he can turn out dozens of amazing drawings in a few minutes’ time.
But did you know that McKeever is an author too? “Help! I’m a Deacon!” was written from the perspective of a pastor who has worked with deacons as a pastor for 42 years, who reports that he loves deacons and yet admits to bearing “scars from confrontations with a few deacons over the years.”
McKeever seasons his wise insights with the humor we all have grown to expect from him through his cartoons. He tackles tough issues with grace, and the result is a book that I would strongly recommend for anyone who is a deacon or might ever become one. Or who might go to church with one.
