“Where did God come from?”
It’s a question many people may ask, whether you are a little boy or a 45-year-old woman.
It was the same question a 6-year-old boy asked of world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham, founder of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
Graham answered the boy in a column in the Kansas City Star, “God has always existed and He always will, because He had no beginning and He will have no end.”
Easy for you to say, Mr. Graham. One might be able to understand God’s eternality, but “something” has to come from “somewhere,” right? At least that’s what most people would identify with.
Graham recognized this common thought and went on to explain to the boy, “I know that’s hard for us to understand because everything around us had a beginning and some day everything will die or come to an end. But that’s not true of God.”
‘No beginning or end’
“He has no beginning or end; He alone is eternal. As the Bible says, ‘Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God’ (Ps. 90:2).”
Graham also explained God’s infiniteness and greatness, both things humans will never understand fully.
In the column Graham also noted how the eternal nature of God is important because it shows the limits of mankind.
“We are limited but He is not, so why not put our lives into His hands,” Graham wrote.
Because God’s eternal nature never changes, Graham noted how God’s love for man also never changes.
“The proof is that He came down from heaven and became a human being: Jesus Christ. He did this so we could be forgiven of our sins and go to be with Him in heaven forever.”
Simple to understand? Probably not for most people. Worth trying to accept and trust? Most definitely, according to Graham, because Jesus is the best gift there is, he said. (TAB)
