Retired Parker Memorial pastor, former prof dies
Billy Harris, retired longtime pastor of Parker Memorial Baptist Church, Anniston, died Oct. 1. He was 77.
An Oxford native, Harris earned his education from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Florida State University in Tallahassee. All the while he was serving as pastor of churches in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.
From 1968 to 1978, Harris was a professor of religion and philosophy at Samford where he taught preaching, speech and religious education.
He retired from his role as pastor of Parker Memorial Baptist in 2005 after serving there almost 20 years. Prior to that he served as pastor of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Hueytown. For the last eight years he has served as interim pastor for Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Jacksonville.
Throughout Harris’ ministry, he served on the board of directors for The Alabama Baptist and on the board of regents for the University of Mobile, as president of the board of governors for Judson College in Marion and as chairman of the committee on boards and commissions for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. He also was selected as one of Samford’s “Ministers of the Year” in 1992.
Harris is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phoebe; three children; and seven grandchildren. (TAB)
