COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A national atheist group recently posted billboards in several cities to encourage people to skip church this Christmas as part of its “Atheist Christmas” campaign.
One billboard in Colorado Springs, Colorado, features a mother with her daughter, who is reading a text from a friend on her phone. “U going to church this Xmas?” She responds, “Lol. No way. I don’t believe that stuff anymore.” The friend replies, “What will your parents say?” And she texts back, saying, “They’ll get over it. :-p.”
Another billboard posted in Lynchburg, Virginia, and Shreveport, Louisiana, says “Make Christmas Great Again, Skip Church!”
According to The Christian Post, David Silverman, president of American Atheists, said, “More and more Americans are leaving religion, but we still have work to do when it comes to fighting the stigma many atheists face.”
The group cited a survey by the Public Religion Research Institute that showed 39 percent of people age 18–29 in the United States are now considered nonreligious. (TAB)
