Former Alabama pastor, state missionary dies

Harold Lee Anderson, longtime pastor who served for 37 years with the State Board of Missions (SBOM), died Sept. 12. He was 87.

A native of Montgomery, Anderson was ordained into the ministry in 1948 while he was still in high school. He held a bachelor’s degree from Howard College (now Samford University); a master of divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; and a doctorate from Luther Rice Seminary in Lithonia, Georgia.

Anderson served as the first pastor of Pinedale Baptist Church, Montgomery, and was an associate pastor for Southside Baptist Church, Birmingham, while in college. He also served as pastor of Kuttawa Baptist Church in Kentucky and Glenwood Baptist Church, Nashville.

He joined SBOM in 1957 and served in various positions during his tenure, holding the position of director of church building and new work at the time of his 1995 retirement.

Anderson was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Montgomery, for more than 40 years, but moved his membership to First Baptist Church, Montgomery, in 2007.

Anderson was an active member of the Montgomery Lions Club for more than 30 years and was named “Lion of the Year” in 2005.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Opal. Anderson is survived by six children, 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. (TAB)
