‘Uplifting’ experience

After experiencing the celebration at Judson College of 175 years of publication of The Alabama Baptist newspaper and receiving the book that chronicles the 175 years, I feel compelled to write a letter of appreciation and congratulations. The day, Feb. 6, in Marion was an uplifting and educational experience for me and my wife. We had not previously visited Marion nor Judson College.

Our first activity was a tour of the historic town of Marion, which was founded in 1822. A high point of the tour was the Siloam Baptist Church building where church services began in 1849 and continue to this day.

We heard presentations by Bob Terry and Jennifer Rash, and by the authors, Elizabeth Wells and Grace Thornton, who wrote the book, “The Alabama Baptist: 175 Years of Informing, Inspiring and Connecting Baptists.”

It was a pleasure to see Elizabeth Wells again. A few years ago she assisted us with researching family genealogy and Alabama Baptist church archives at Samford University. At that time we learned that she knew our son, Tom Briscoe, who graduated from Samford in 1991. It turned out that she did not just know our son. He told us: “Mrs. Wells took good care of me when I was a student at Samford.”

The Alabama Baptist has been a good source of information for us since we moved back to Alabama. We very much appreciate the paper and also the book about its history.
