Cahaba Association will celebrate its 200th anniversary Oct. 28 at Siloam Church, Marion, beginning at 2 p.m. with food and special displays in the fellowship hall. The celebration service will begin at 3 p.m. Special guests will include Rick Barnhart from the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, Jennifer Rash and Debbie Campbell from The Alabama Baptist, Lonette Berg from the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission and Doug Wilder, pastor of Cahaba Valley Church. Brenda Lovelady Spahn, who founded The Lovelady Center in Birmingham 20 years ago, died Dec. 18. She was 75. More than 19,600 women have come through the program she started in 2004.
Between songs at their sold-out “Drummer Boy Christmas” performance at the Grand Ole Opry on Dec. 17, Joel Smallbone, along with his brother Luke of the Christian band For King and Country, mentioned it was an evening of firsts.
Lee Allen, who served as a history professor at Samford University for 40 years, died Dec. 16. During his time at Samford, he was a prolific writer, particularly of Baptist history. He was also named Life Deacon at Mountain Brook Baptist.
For unspecified reasons, a local government in Uzbekistan is demolishing a Baptist church’s buildings.
