A Slippery Slope

A Slippery Slope

I wanted to offer my agreement and support of your editorial in the Jan. 27 issue of The Alabama Baptist. We Baptists need to mark a spot and take a stand.

Thank you for your integrity and courage in speaking out. More than a decade ago, I heard a Baptist from another congregation say that the church that I belong to should withdraw from the state convention since we support the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

I told him to check the facts and look at the giving record the next time it was reported in The Alabama Baptist. I told him he would find that we were in the top 5 percent of giving to the Southern Baptist Convention in the association.

His statements led me to believe that his pastor must be putting out disinformation, but I did not voice my opinion. I later found that my thoughts were true. I wonder how the proposed constitutional amendment will be worded. Will it exclude only specific groups? Will churches be free to support other individuals, groups and missions efforts? It sure sounds like a slippery slope that gets steeper the further from our roots we slide.
