Longtime bivocational pastor dies at 88

Clavis Eugene Akridge, retired Alabama Baptist pastor, died July 10. He was 88.

Akridge accepted Christ as a youth during a night service at First Baptist Church, Bayou La Batre. After enlisting in the Navy in 1946, he accepted God’s call to ministry. He was ordained at Madden Baptist Church, Heflin, Louisiana, in 1949.

Most of his 42 years of ministry were served bivocationally in Louisiana and Alabama and included pastoring the following churches: Whitehouse Fork Baptist Church, Bay Minette; Friendship Baptist Church, Grand Bay; West Highland Baptist Church, Mobile; Nokomis Baptist Church, Atmore; Josephine Baptist Church, Elberta; Fairhope Avenue Baptist Church, Fairhope; and Shell Banks Baptist Church, Gulf Shores. He also served as interim pastor of First Baptist Church, Gulf Shores; Bethel Baptist Church, Robertsdale; and First, Bayou La Batre.

Akridge also served for 27 years in teaching and school administration in Alabama’s public school system.

He held a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana College in Pineville and a master’s degree from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Akridge also attended seminary for one year.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Margaret. He is survived by three daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. (TAB)
