Alabama Baptists will be assisting in the continued cleanup efforts in New York following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to Tommy Puckett, director of men’s ministries for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions.
Bob and Sarah Helms, members of Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, are coordinating all Southern Baptist cleanup efforts for the next two months.
Jerry Butler and five other disaster relief team members left Oct. 15 for a 10-day cleanup and recovery effort. Butler, who coordinates disaster relief volunteers for Alabama Baptists, will lead the team in an area near ground zero called the red zone. They will perform administrative duties, inventory and check out equipment, survey and clean up damaged apartments and deliver equipment supplies to the work sites.
Another team from Walker and Tuscaloosa associations will relieve the first team Oct. 26.
A 14-member feeding crew out of District 1, which includes Madison and Marshall associations, leaves Oct. 29 to work in the Salvation Army feeding kitchen. With around-the-clock work needed, the team will work seven-member shifts.
