Alabama Baptists offer refreshments, gospel to Talladega race fans

Race fans of a different type were geared up for this year’s spring race weekend at Talladega Superspeedway April 28–30.

Volunteers working with Alabama Raceway Ministries (ARM) converged on the track and its surrounding campgrounds to minister to fans attending the races with cold water and welcoming words.

Many traveled to the track the night of April 27 to help set up ARM’s five ministry sites, including David Ellison, a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Birmingham.

He and two others — David Gerk, also an Eastside Baptist member, and Greg Moore, a member of First Baptist Church, Pinson — delivered 4,800 bottles of water donated by Eastside and NorthPark Baptist Church, Trussville, to ARM’s North Campground site, which is co-sponsored by Birmingham and Calhoun Baptist associations.

Volunteers handed out the water to race fans and invited them to attend Sunday morning services at one of the ARM sites.

Ellison — who is in his sixth year of involvement with Eastside’s
annual water donation — estimated that each year, about 6,000–7,000 bottles of water are given out to the fans who stay on the campground’s nearly 700 acres. “We just try to do something outside the walls of the church,” he said.
