Several Alabama Baptists served during the June 18–19 Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) annual meeting in Phoenix. Those serving were:
Michael E. Shaw, pastor of FBC Pelham, and Murray Wilton, pastor of Southside Baptist Church, Huntsville, served on the Committee on Committees
Scott Dawson, Birmingham served as chairman of the credentials committee.
Roy Crowe served as chairman of the tellers committee.
Dale Wallace served on the resolutions committee.
Jimmy E. Jackson, pastor of Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, served as a parliamentarian.
Herbert T. Thomas, pastor of Circlewood Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, presented part of the Executive Committee (EC) report and was awarded a plaque of appreciation for his years of service on the EC.
Curtis “Bubba” Garrett of FBC Springville offered a resolution on “abortion victims’ reconciliation” which was reworked to become the resolution “On Thirty Years of Roe v. Wade.”
Chaplain Al Hill of Gadsden offered a motion “requiring ordination to the pastoral ministry by a cooperating SBC church as a requirement for the endorsement as a U.S. military chaplain.” It was referred to the North American Mission Board (NAMB).
Several Alabamians were elected to serve during the coming year or fill a position at the 2004 SBC meeting.
Dean Forrest of Pike Road was elected to serve as associational music director for the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists.
Penny Isbell of Bessemer was elected treasurer for the Southern Baptist Messianic Fellowship.
Donna Gaines of Gardendale’s First Baptist Church was elected president of the Ministers’ Wives Conference. Marilyn Foley, a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church, Mobile, was elected recording secretary/treasurer.
Steve Gaines, pastor of Gardendale’s First Baptist Church, was selected to preach the 2004 SBC convention sermon.
Gerald Clayton Hallmark Sr., pastor of FBC Alexander City, and Gordon Gilbreath of Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, were elected to serve on the committee on nominations.
Sam Brassell Jr. of Southside Baptist Church, Dothan, was elected to serve on the Executive Committee.
James W. Pruett of Concord Baptist Church, Bessemer, and Laurelle M. Stoudenmire of Thomasville Baptist Church, were elected to serve as Annuity Board trustees.
Gary Hollingsworth, pastor of FBC Trussville was re-elected to serve as a NAMB trustee.
Stevan H. Parsons of Maytown Baptist Church was elected to serve on Southern Seminary’s board.
Larry C. Patterson of FBC Silverhill was elected to serve on New Orleans Seminary’s board.
Ed Litton, pastor of FBC North Mobile, Saraland, was elected to serve on Southeastern Seminary’s board.
