October 11 will see college campuses around the nation buzzing with unusual activity. Baptist Campus Ministries (BCM) nationwide are holding an event called ENGAGE24 in which they encourage all Christian college students — and all Christians in general — to share the gospel with at least one person in that 24-hour period.
“Most if not all Christian students know what to say — they just don’t say it,” said Mike Nuss, director of the office of collegiate and student ministries for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. ENGAGE24 is a chance for BCM leaders to spur their students to step out in faith and share the gospel with nonbelieving students.
Baptists in Alabama will be participating in all of the four-year public schools and many community colleges as well, Nuss said.
Nate Young, senior campus minister with the University of Alabama (UA) BCM, said students there are both excited and nervous about the day. Beginning mid-September the BCM will offer training and “tutoring” sessions to help students become more comfortable sharing their faith with others.
They plan to “identify students who are willing to take up the challenge,” Young said, asking students to be held accountable to share.
Damien Christian, a junior political science major from Troy and the leader of UA BCM’s evangelism team, is grateful to see students encouraged to share their faith.
“If 10 percent (of Christians) shared their faith, that would change our campus,” he said. “Right now about 1 percent share.” He hopes this day will encourage students, especially freshmen, to cultivate sharing their faith more often.
