The eighth annual “Day of Prayer Over Students Across Alabama” is March 29.
Gov. Bob Riley first declared the statewide prayer emphasis in 2006 at the request of First Priority, who is coordinating the 2013 event with Moms in Prayer, a nonprofit ministry. Gov. Robert Bentley declared the 2013 Day of Prayer.
First Priority, a Christian youth organization, is “encouraging individuals to turn school zones into prayer zones by praying over schools every time they pass by them,” according to a First Priority news release.
It also lists several ways to become involved in the Day of Prayer:
- Plan a 24-hour prayer vigil at church
- Plan a “prayer walk” around local schools — permission from the school principal must be acquired first
- Join a Moms in Prayer group
First Priority Greater Birmingham Executive Director Matt Wilson said in the release, “Praying for students is not just a privilege, it’s a necessity. … Without prayer, these students will not be able to stand against the insurmountable odds they will face from childhood until they leave this world.”
With the theme verse 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, the Day of Prayer is a reminder to “pray without ceasing” for students across Alabama. “We invite you to join us in prayer on this important day,” Wilson said.
