Americans give to religious groups on Giving Tuesday

December 3 is the second annual Giving Tuesday, “a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season,” according to givingtuesday.org.

And according to The Washington Post, billions of dollars will go to religious groups in 2013. New research counts motivation for giving and donations to faith-connected nonprofits that are doing secular service like fighting poverty as “giving to religious groups.”

The research report, “Connected to Give: Faith Communities,” was co-authored by Shawn Landres who told The Post, “Most people cite their religious communities, but most also cite the belief that they should give to benefit others. Many people hold both these impulses at the same time.”

The report found that in 2012: 63 percent of all Americans donated to a cause, charity or philanthropy; 71 percent of those donors gave both to religious groups and to nonreligious organizations.

The report also cites generosity thriving among people who claim no religion, The Post reported. Thirty-four percent of these “nones” give still give to religiously identified organizations.
