WASHINGTON — Americans are reporting higher satisfaction with their personal lives than they have in the past 10 years, according to a recent Gallup poll.
At the beginning of 2017, 87 percent of those polled said they were satisfied with their life, and 57 percent reported being “very satisfied.” Both of those numbers have risen to the levels they were before the recession, Gallup reports.
For most major subgroups, numbers were higher, but Republicans were one of the few whose satisfaction with their personal lives did not increase. That group had reported higher levels of personal satisfaction during the eight years of the George W. Bush administration. But Democrats increased seven percentage points from 2016 to 2017, Gallup reported.
Overall, Americans are much less satisfied with the direction of the nation, with 26 percent saying they were pleased with the way the country was headed. Two exceptions were right before the election, when satisfaction levels hit 37 percent, and in July when it dropped to 17 percent in the wake of several deadly confrontations between black men and police, Gallup reported.
