I think you’re wrong about the Ashcroft Bible studies (editorial, May 31). While staffers are not “required” to attend, there is a possibility there would be a subtle pressure to attend to stay in good standing with the boss, and there would be a separateness felt by those who did not attend. There could well be a feeling that, if you want to get ahead in this organization, you’d better go to these studies. Such a company attitude could result in the hiring only of people who shared the attorney general’s religious views, regardless of abilities. The Baptist view should be what it has historically been: Don’t use the government to force religion down anybody’s throat.
