Baptists keep four congressional seats

The number of Alabama Baptists serving the state in Congress remains steady following the recent District 2 congressional race as Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright (D) was elected to the seat opened up by retiring Rep. Terry Everett (R).

Everett, a member of First Baptist Church, Enterprise, was one of four Baptist congressmen from the state of Alabama.

Bright, a member of First Baptist Church, Montgomery, also serves on the board of directors for The Alabama Baptist newspaper.

The other Alabama Baptists are Rep. Mike Rogers (R), District 3, member of First Baptist Church, Saks, in Anniston; Rep. Spencer Bachus (R), District 6, member of Hunter Street Baptist Church, Hoover; and Rep. Artur Davis (D), District 7, who attends Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, Birmingham.

In District 5, Parker Griffith (D),  an Episcopalian, landed the spot opened up by retiring Rep. Robert E. “Bud” Cramer (D), a Methodist.

Rep. Jo Bonner (R), District 1, is Episcopal and serves on the president’s advisory council for the University of Mobile.

Rep. Robert B. Aderholt (R), District 4, is Congregationalist.

In the United States Senate, Sen. Richard Shelby (R) is Presbyterian and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R) is Methodist.
Nationwide there are two Southern Baptist U.S. senators and 23 Southern Baptist U.S. representatives.  (TAB)
