As the Atlantic side of the continent has suffered a beating from hurricanes, Baptists are mobilizing to provide help for storm victims. Disaster relief efforts also continue for volunteers helping flood victims in the Midwest.
The International Mission Board (IMB) is working to help those affected by Hurricane Felix, which made landfall on Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast Sept. 4. Two teams of local pastors currently are assessing damage in the hardest-hit areas.
In Mexico, national believers have used both IMB and Samaritan’s Purse funds to distribute food to nearly 17,000 people affected by Hurricane Dean, which hit in late August. These workers also have distributed 10,000 liters of water in remote villages, along with enough plastic roofing to cover 8,000 houses.
Meanwhile Baptist World Aid, the relief arm of Baptist World Alliance, has made a $10,000 donation to help Jamaican victims of Dean.
In the Midwest, a team of 10 chaplains from Alabama returned from Minnesota Sept. 6. At press time, a second team of 10 was set to depart for that state Sept. 8. Mud-out teams from Mud Creek, Sand Mountain and Elmore Baptist associations were set to leave for Ohio Sept. 9, 11 and 14, respectively. (TAB)
