After 59 years in ministry, Bennie (Ben) Fred Harris died June 4. He was 83.
Harris earned his bachelor’s degree from Howard College in Birmingham (now Samford University) and a master’s degree from the University of Alabama.
Harris served as a chaplain’s assistant in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.
Some of the churches he served as pastor in Alabama include Evergreen Baptist Church, Billingsley; Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Sylacauga; Delta Baptist Church; Lystra Baptist Church, Ashland; and Bethel South Baptist Church, Lineville, in Clay Baptist Association where he retired in 2005 and was a member at the time of his death. Harris also served as pastor of churches in Georgia.
He taught mathematics at eight schools in Alabama and Georgia and served as the head of the mathematics department at DeKalb Community College in Clarkston, Ga.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; four children; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
