Then I Will Hope for You
Angela Hatch. Madison, Ala.: Angela Hatch. 2018. 180 pp. (Paperback).

Angela Hatch’s first book was a winner. It was the story of a family in Guatemala whose lives were changed by the gift of a home built by Casas por Cristo. This second one, if anything, is even better.

“Then I Will Hope for You,” like its predecessor, is the fictionalized story of a poor family. This is the family of 10-year-old Domiku, whose family is already living on the edge of disaster in Haiti before the earthquake in 2010. The book tells of the family’s struggles to survive the devastation and hopelessness that washes around them during and after the earthquake and Compassion International’s role in bringing the gospel message along with practical, life-saving help to Domiku and his family.

It is a well-told story and an engaging read. I think what I like best about Hatch’s writing is her restraint. She does not overwhelm the reader with documentary-style pleas for help but instead lets the simple story stand for itself. In the end, “Then I Will Hope for You” achieves its goal: to acquaint the reader with people who are in dire situations and the organizations that are on the front lines meeting needs in the name of Christ.

Hatch is active in her church and missions work in Madison.
