Former Alabama governor and Alabama Baptist Albert Preston Brewer, a man who was said to have “lived his life an example of integrity and professionalism,” died Jan. 2. He was 88.
A native of Tennessee, Brewer spent most of his life in Decatur.
He served as the state’s 47th governor from 1968 to 1971.
Brewer became a professor of law and government at Samford University in Birmingham in 1987.
Samford President Andrew Westmoreland said Brewer was “the epitome of a Christian gentleman. He served the university with distinction, as he did everything in life.”
Brewer — a member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, Birmingham — was preceded in death by his wife, Martha and daughter Becky. He is survived by daughter Alison, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (Neisha Roberts)
