Clara Brown, 85, volunteers 40 hours per week in the office of Cropwell Baptist Church. Brown is aware of God’s hand in her life as she tells how He saved her from bleeding to death after surgery when she was a child and how He healed her from cancer in 1970 and again in 1998.

Q: Why do you volunteer in the church office?
A: The Lord’s been so good to me. I wanted to do a little something to show what a wonderful Lord and Savior we have. He sure looks after us. I just can’t tell you what a wonderful thing it is to be able to do a little something for Him.

Q: What does your volunteer ministry demand?
A: I answer the phone, make copies and do anything else I can do that they ask me to do. When I’m not doing that, I crochet blankets. (Since 1999, Brown has crocheted more than 300 blankets, most of which have been given to the church’s nursery to present to members who have a newborn.)

Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: Joy. I know the Father loves me and I love Him, and I want to serve Him the best I can … because He blesses me every day.

Q: What led you to your volunteer ministry?
A: I just wanted to do something for the Lord. I just wanted to show my love for Him. … (In 1999), one lady already was volunteering here, and I asked if I could help. I started off with three days a week. I asked if I could come every day. I just can’t look at four walls and not do something for Him.

Q: How do other family members support you?
A: They want me to do what I want to do. They are very grateful to the Lord that I am able to do it.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?

A: As long as the Lord lets me get up and go and the church puts up with me, I’ll be here.
